Many of the cages used by the Centre are the "Gib-Trap" model, built in Italy by the company "G. Narduzzi di Zanigo di Mirago" in the Province of Venice. The cages are arranged in long rows on the terraced part of the hill. Each cage holds two pairs of breeders. The dimensions of the cage are 2m x 2m x 1.3m. The cages are raised 50cm off the ground and are divided into two main areas: the living area and the nest area.
The living area is 2m2, with wire mesh flooring and wood siding. There are two openings in the front, each with a water dispensing system and feeders which can be refilled from the outside to minimize the disturbance to the animals.
The nest area is reserved for the leverets and is not accessible to the adults. This area is removable which facilitates the capture and counting of the animals.
The "Gib-Trap" model of cage has proven to be the most practical in that it presents all of the characteristics necessary to keep the animals calm, clean and safe from harm. Furthermore, the cages can be easily inspected and manipulated by the operator.
